Sri Lanka Calling bring you news of UNWTO World Tourism Day celebrations at Hotel Taj Exotica Bentota and the views of the British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka on tourism and its revival, Commonwealth Games City 2014 to be announced in Colombo in November, Sri Lanka being included in Marks and Spencer’s Green Agenda, Lankan Annual Reports being among World’s Best, “Serendib Treasures” to dazzle travellers on Sri Lankan Airlines, ‘The Tea Factory ’ Sri Lanka’s first theme hotel featured in the UK Sunday Times as being one of the best 100 and news of the Exotic New Oriental Hotel now called Amangalla.

 

World of Tourism once again sees destination Sri Lanka a land like no other, as a vibrant land ready to host the world and charm the visitor with its myriad splendours. Celebrations inaugurated in the southern coastal tourist resort of Bentota continues in all provinces with an accent on the UNWTO theme this year of “Tourism Opens Doors for Women” The celebration saw 20 power women in tourism from 11 countries representing several continents meeting in Sri Lanka to discuss the ways and means through which women can reach greater heights in tourism pursuits. The Secretary General of the UNWTO Francesco Frangialli and Assistant Secretary General Prof. Geoffrey Lipman was joined by Tourism Minister of Sri Lanka Milinda Moragoda, and the Minister for Women’s Affairs in Bentota at the Summit and at the colourful official celebrations.

Hon Dominic Chilcott, the British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, praised the tourism industry for its steadfastness through difficult times when he addressed the Ceylon Hotel School Graduates Association in Habarana recently. He also acknowledged the potential for further development of the industry to be ranked amongst Sri Lanka’s leading industries, giving credit to the variety of the offer of tourist sites, from beaches to temples to scenery to wildlife and the smiling people that make Sri Lanka a unique destination.

Commonwealth Games Federation Logo

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is to be held in Colombo from the 5th to 10th November. All eyes will be on Colombo when the host city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games is announced on 9th of November. Representatives from 71 nations will be in Colombo for the event with India, host to the 2010 Games bringing in the largest contingent of 50 delegates, and scheduled to make a special presentation in Colombo.

Marks and Spencer UK in its exercise to draw its suppliers to its Green Agenda has chosen Thulhiriya in Sri Lanka, to set up its first eco –friendly clothing factory which will be ready for production in the first quarter of next year, according to a company communiqué issued recently.

A Gold in the Overall Annual Report of the ‘National Commercial Bank’ sub category was won by the premier state commercial bank, Bank of Ceylon. Commercial Bank won two awards: a Silver for the cover design in the local banks category and Overall Annual Report in the same category, while National Savings Bank won an award for the Best Interior Design in the Banks: savings and loans category.

Tea Factory The UK’s largest selling Sunday newspaper the Sunday Times featured ‘The Tea Factory’ in its Travel section this month bringing credit to Sri Lanka. The first tea factory to be converted to a boutique hotel earning it a UNESCO Pacific Heritage Merit Award in 2001 for “The impressive conversion of a dilapidated tea factory in to a luxury hotel complex” An architectural master piece the building earned the South Asian Architecture Award in 1995 and in 2000 was recognised by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors for “restoration while maintaining its original façade.”

Within the 400 year old walls of Galle Fort - classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site - Amangalla is housed in historic colonial buildings, dating from 1684. The Oriental Hotel was founded in 1863, and renamed the New Oriental Hotel at the turn of the century. Today it is one of Asia’s oldest registered hotels. Fully renovated and restored to the lustrous ambience of a distant era, it is now operative under the name Amangalla.
