Vesak Celebrations’08

19th May 2008 (Monday) to 20th May 2008 (Tuesday)

Venue: Beruwela Beach
First ever to be organized in a mega scale in celebrating the most profound religious festival of the Buddhists.

The festival will include a an extravagant Mini Perahera on the beach along with pirith chanting and devotional songs to be performed in beautifully decorated and illuminated barges on the Bentota river. Also an exciting display of colourful lanterns blended with the Sri Lankan artistry, a vesak card competition, a religious devotional song competition, etc all awaits at the Beruwela beach….

 

The CIMA World Conference at the BMICH from 28th to 31st May 2008

Around 300-400 foreign delegates are expected to attend the Conference in Sri Lanka, with most of the delegates coming from India, UK, Malaysia, China, the Middle East and Australia. The distinguished panel of speakers who will be at the World Conference are:

1) John Hume (Ireland) – Second Leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), Recipient of the Gandhi Peace Prize and the Martin Luther King Award, the only recipient of the 3 major peace awards

Poson Full Moon Poya Day

18th June 2008 (Wednesday) to 18th June 2008 (Wednesday)

The Poson Full Moon poya day is the second most important Poya for Sri Lankan Buddhists. The day celebrates the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka 2550 years ago. Mihindu thero visited Mihinthala Mountain and intelligently sermonized to king Devanampiyathissa who was hunting a deer. Mihinthalawa has been declared as a sanctuary and it is probably the oldest sanctuary in the world portraying Srilankan’s nature-friendly attitude.

Main activities of Poson Full Moon Poya centers to Mihinthalawa, but celebrated around the country.
 

Boat Show 2008

8th June 2008 (Sunday) to 10th June 2008 (Tuesday)

Venue: BMICH

Sri Lanka is hosting its first ever Boat Show in June. It will open new frontiers of Leisure, Boating, Marine, Industrialization and Commercial Vessels. In Sri Lanka the trend of leisure and adventure boating is yet to found its true potential and this exhibition will promote all these aspects. Exhibition is open for including both suppliers and buyers.

 

Vesak Lantern competitions and displays

20th May 2008 (Tuesday) to 27th May 2008 (Tuesday)

To mark the event and encourage the flow of traditions to the next generations, Vesak lantern competitions are annually organized that attracts visitors. There are many shapes of Vesak lanterns on exhibition. Baudhaloka Mawatha in Colombo 7, has always been the center for hosting these lanterns for many years.

 

Vesak Full Moon Day

19th May 2008 (Monday) to 20th May 2008 (Tuesday)

Vesak is the main event in Buddhists’ Calendar. The day celebrates Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death. The event is spiritual where all the Buddhists swarm in the temples, clad in white. Beautiful pandals and lanterns which are traditionally made of bamboo, are set up in many places in the country. A visit on Vesak night around the country or cities will be a rewarding experience.
