In order to help Sri Lankans to utilize and enjoy the rich and varied holiday and pilgrim assets of their country on a modest budget, the Ceylon Tourist Board has set up a network of Domestic Resorts in prime locations in Nuwara Eliya, Bandarawela, Anuradhapura, Kataragama and Bentota.

Set in exceptionally scenic and salubrious locations in premier hill-stations, hallowed and historic shrines and beaches, these resorts also offer superb sightseeing with the bonus of moderately priced, comfortable "home away from home" accommodation with an authentic Sri Lankan flavour and comprehensive facilities.

Anuradhapura Rest House

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka hallowed ancient capital and best-loved of all sacred cities, beckons pilgrims and sightseers with shrines and archaeological treasures such as the Thuparamaya, Lovamahapaya, Isurumuniya, Ruwanweliseya, the Sri Maha Bodhi, the Abayagiri and Jetavan dagabas. The 3rd century B.C. shrines and monuments of Mihintale are only 11 km. away. The Rest house which is within walking distance of the railway station and the Sacred City, offers 18 comfortable double rooms with baths, each sleeping up to four persons, in a graceful complex. Other facilities include a restaurant with Sri Lankan and western food on order, an attractive lounge and garden.

Bandarawela Domestic Holiday Resort

The Bandarawela Domestic Holiday Resort, with sweeping views of Haputale, Kirigalpoththa, Hakgala, Totapola and Pidurutalagala, is situated on Golf Links Road, two miles from the town. Nine 2-roomed cottages with attached baths, each accommodating six persons an done mini-cottage with four bunk beds are available. In addition there are two separate 20-bed dormitory units with four common toilets and showers and 4 separate eight-bunk rooms with common toilets and showers. Resort facilities include a restaurant and bar, badminton, indoor games, a tasteful lounge with T.V., a children park and conference and areceptin hall facilities for about 100 persons. Linen is provided and kitchen facilities are available in the cottages. L.P. gas is provided at an extra charge. No cooking is allowed in the dormitories.

Bentota Resort

For those who dream of a relaxing sea-side holiday, the Tourist Board offers a charming 2-roomed cottage (accommodating up to six persons), in a picturesque confluence of sea and river at the Bentota National Holiday Resort. The services of a cook add a touch of luxury to the self-catering facilities here. Other amenities include a picnic area with summer houses and changing rooms.

Even though the capital investment may warrant higher tariffs, rates at all Domestic Holiday Resorts and Rest Houses are kept at a minimum to enable Sri Lankans to enjoy a vacation or make a pilgrimage on a modest budget. Kataragama Rest House

Kataragama, one of Sri lanka s most sacred shrines, is a pilgrim center for diverse religious faiths. Many colourful festivals, rituals and ceremonies such as peraheras, traditional poojas, fire-walking and expiatory penances are a feature here. The Rest house at Kataragama offers 43 double rooms with attached baths. Nuwara Eliya Domestic Holiday Resort

The Nuwara Eliya Resort sited picturesquely on the shores of Lake Gregory, over-looking the Mahagastota hills offers three types of accommodation 3 detached two-roomed cottages with attached baths a 6 double-bedroom block with attached baths and 22-bunk dormitory which also has 3 separate family rooms, with common baths and toilets. Facilities include hot water and heaters, linen, restaurant, bar and a children park. Crockery, cutlery and kitchen facilities are provided in the cottages for self-catering.
